The Voice At The Helm
“When a child is doing something, she is passionately interested in, she grows like a tree- sending out roots down into the soil. And suddenly one of these little roots goes deep down, strikes a source of water and the whole tree grows- in all directions. This is how children grow.”
Our Story
As a student in the ’80s when school was a place for children to go for the day, as the father goes to work at the ‘office’ and the mother nourishes the family, the PTMs were always lamenting the parents of how the child behaved and worked (mostly undesirably, in the adult’s understanding). They expected the teachers to help them make the children ‘toe the line’ and show some discipline. Children were considered more like toys or machines meant to ‘perform’ in a way that is ‘socially’ acceptable.
That was the moment when I wondered if anyone understood a child: the child who in reality is a beautiful treasure trove of stardust, of dreams, of wonder, of hope. Why is the child viewed as good or bad, a success or a failure, as black or white when in reality they are all the vibrant shades of a rainbow?
That was when a little seed was planted in my child-heart that has grown to create a space for children where they are embraced for all the hues they bring, just as long ago a little child-heart had hoped for her.
The Journey
Having always had a forward vision towards educating children differently, we are finally set to take the bigger road! NLA has always prioritized on emotional and psychological development and welfare of students. Only a happy and healthy mind can be deeply rooted into a life-long system for learning. We look at curiosity and inquiry to be the key elements for our educational experience at NLA. For we believe that it’s this that makes children learn happily throughout their school years.
Our curriculum was built by amalgamating the best practices from various ideologies! Focusing on the best and relatable elements of all three schools of thought, helped us navigate a new formula for a very holistic approach to our learning environments that embraces diversity and seeks innovative solutions to address complex challenges. This in turn made school less monotonous to young learners and helped achieve better interest groups within classes.
What starts as an idea, flourishes into something that involves critical thinking or deep analysis in our classrooms. This helps build a “culturally component” classroom environment.
Our Campus also includes a central common space, called “chat lobby” where students can sit and discuss their projects&ideas with peers or teachers. This way students can contribute to their curriculum ideas or classroom schedule.
We want to build a learning community that is much more interested in ‘Wonder’ than information, in ‘Silence’ than in noise. This is how we encourage a culture of reflection amongst NLA students. NLA follows a recent trend in education called “personalized learning.” The teacher doesn’t lecture but acts more as a facilitator to students, who choose how and what they learn.
NLA’s larger goal is to rethink traditional education, and build a happier and emotionally healthier generation. We want to raise young adults who would effortlessly merge in our constantly evolving communities. It’s about flipping the priorities of traditional pedagogy. We shall constantly strive to work hard towards fulfilling a more intellectually dynamic and compassionate younger generation.
